Why these sites are never switched off
A cable landing station or a carrier hotel carries live traffic. There is no window in which the DC distribution can be de-energised, because the equipment it feeds is the service itself. Telecom power is -48 VDC, it floats a few volts above nominal, and it stays live while you work on it.
That single fact decides everything else: who may do the work, how many people are needed, and what has to be written down afterwards.
What the work actually involves
The scope is narrow and repeatable. On a proof of concept or an equipment introduction, it usually looks like this:
- cables pulled to length, stripped and lugs crimped to the specified section - 16 sqmm and above is common;
- one end terminated on the customer's distribution cabinet or MCB panel, the other on your equipment's DC terminals;
- A and B feeds kept separate and traceable end to end;
- polarity and voltage verified with a calibrated instrument before the equipment is energised;
- cables routed, tied and labelled so the next engineer reads the installation without a drawing;
- de-termination after the trial, when the installation is temporary.
Two technicians is not an upsell
Live DC work is done by two people: one performing the terminations, one acting as safety watch throughout. Insulated tooling, a calibrated torque wrench, insulating blankets and PPE are part of the method, not extras.
The cost of the second technician is small next to the cost of an interruption on an operational site. That is the whole argument, and it is why a one-person quote for this work should worry you rather than tempt you.
The licence is the reason to use someone local
Electrical work of this kind is regulated in Japan and requires the relevant Japanese electrician's licence. An engineer flown in for the week does not hold it, however senior. Nor does a general remote-hands provider whose people swap disks and reboot servers.
This is the gap that leaves foreign vendors stuck: the person who knows your equipment cannot legally terminate it, and the person who can be dispatched cannot do live DC work.
What you receive afterwards
The deliverable is not a photograph and a thumbs up. A site of this class needs a record that survives an audit:
- measured voltage at each input, against the specified reference range;
- the instrument used, with its category rating;
- a final inspection checklist - torque, polarity, labelling, routing, insulation, no abnormal heating;
- photographs in installation order, from source to energised equipment;
- an explicit note of the safety arrangements on a live site;
- sign-off, in English, the same day.
How to brief it in one message
The enquiries that get a firm price rather than a range contain six things:
- the site, its address and how access is granted;
- the dates, including whether the window falls on a weekend;
- the scope at both ends, and the cable section;
- who supplies cables, lugs and consumables;
- the acceptance criteria - what has to be true for the work to be signed off;
- one named person who can decide on site when something unexpected appears.
